Course Description

This course introduces builders, contractors, and industry professionals to the fundamentals of residential HVAC design and installation, with a focus on new home construction. Learners will gain a practical understanding of how heating systems, ductwork, and mechanical ventilation work together to create comfortable, efficient, and healthy indoor environments.

This course covers:

General HVAC Fundamentals: Key design standards (TECA, HRAI, SMACNA, ASHRAE) and CSA F280 heat loss/heat gain calculations that determine system sizing.
Heating Systems: Common residential heating options, including furnaces, heat pumps, ductless mini-splits, electric baseboards, and hydronic systems, with guidance on equipment selection and commissioning.
Ductwork: Principles of duct design, sizing, and installation; supply and return air distribution; sealing, insulation, and fire protection requirements in line with national and provincial codes.
Ventilation: Mechanical ventilation strategies, HRV/ERV system design and balancing, minimum airflow requirements (CSA-F326, ASHRAE 62.2), and managing indoor humidity for comfort and durability.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

Distinguish between types of mechanical ventilation systems
Explain the need for mechanical ventilation in new houses
Describe the factors involved in carrying out heat loss and heat gain calculations
Describe the most common space heating equipment options for new construction
Describe common delivery systems and controls for space heating
