Course Description

This series of eLearnings prepare you with knowledge needed to understand high performance building enclosure systems for new homes. It includes 3 course modules intended to progress your knowledge of the primary control functions of the building enclosure system and how these systems are constructed to effectively manage water, airtightness, and thermal control.

Each eLearning course module includes interviews with subject matter specialists and builders, case studies, photos & illustrations, and activities. Together, these module lessons educate you on appropriate material selection, enclosure configurations, and other important considerations to be made when building high performance building enclosures in BC.

While each module can be completed on its own, we recommend taking all three modules in the following order:

  • Module 1: Water Management
  • Module 2: Airtightness
  • Module 3: Thermal Control

Module 1: Water Management

  • This 9 lesson module introduces the concept of building enclosure control layers, including the water control layer, and review potential outcomes of poor water management that builders can avoid by implementing the 4D’s principle.
  • Lessons dedicated to each area of the new home (i.e., below-grade assemblies, above-grade walls, roof assemblies, and fenestrations) provide practice guidance on selecting appropriate application-specific materials and assemblies and maintain effective water control at common building enclosure details.
