Course Description

This 5-module course is designed to provide you with an understanding of the purpose of air, vapour, and weather barriers. In this course we review the differences between components, what the functions and benefits are, and best practices for installation to increase the durability of a home and reduce warranty call backs. More specficially, in this course we explore:

  • Module 1: High Performance Homes and the House-As-A-System Concept
  • Module 2: Fundamental Building Science Principles of Heat, Air, and Moisture Flows
  • Module 3: Water Resistant Barriers and Strategies for Protecting Building Enclosures
  • Module 4: Air Barriers
  • Module 5: Vapour Barriers

Learn how Canadian building science research identified how individual components of houses had to work together as a system in order to achieve the high performance characteristics new home buyers have come to expect.

Discuss the science, techniques, and material options to properly protect homes from water intrusion.

Learn how to create effective air barriers in building enclosures

Understand how water vapour control in attics, walls, and foundations relates to the types and amounts of thermal insulation used.
