Course Description

*This course meets BC Housing’s new training requirements for BC Energy Step Code for builder licensing, covering Modules 1 to 3.

The goal of this course is to provide builders information needed to successfully build BC Energy Step Code compliant Part 9 New Homes in British Columbia.

Course topics include:

  • Understanding the BC Energy Step Code, its purpose, and how it can be implemented
  • Identifying the different BC Energy Step Code performance metrics, and how new home components affect home performance values
  • Reviewing design considerations that may be required when building a new home, and how they affect the performance metrics listed in the Step Code
  • Identifying the administrative steps you will be required to take when building a BC Energy Step Code compliant home
  • Discuss how builders, energy advisors, and building officials work together, and review common issues and best practices

State what the BC Energy Step Code is, it’s intent, and why it is being implemented

Understand how the Step Code works, and the impact of Climate Zones

Differentiate between a prescriptive approach VS a performance approach

Identify the TEDI, MEUI, and Airtightness Step Code categories, and how they interact with the Step Code

Navigate the different Step Code compliance construction steps

Identify MEUI target consideration with a focus on house orientation, windows, insulation, air sealing, and other factors

Course Format

All online courses require successful completion of the following components:

  • Review all course materials in full. The course includes interactive lessons, instructional videos and reference materials divided into individual units (modules) of study. Units can be completed at a student’s own pace.
